Diamond shingles – Fish Scale shingles – Dragon Scale Shingles – Beaver Tail Shingles

by Christina

Diamond shingles, fish scale shingles, dragon scale shingles. beaver tail shingles.

Many of these terms are used interchangeably, and there isn’t necessarily an industry glossary determining which word is intended for which pattern. Indeed, there are variations on a theme as we’ll discuss. We’ll offer our take on diamond shingles, dragon scale shingles, fish scale shingles and beaver tail shingles and show various riffs off the original.

Diamond shingles:

Also called flat lock shingles, our standard issue flat lock diamond shingles come in a variety of sizes, angles and configurations.

The options for layout and application depend on the roof pitch, so tell us what you have in mind before you make plans. We’ve helped clients mix colors and plan designs just using different colors to an unbelievably stunning effect. Even the simplest and most humble of cottages pump up major design volume with just a little bit of creative shingle accent placement. Think mixing things up like you do with interior wall tiles or floor tiles and you have an enviable one of a kind metal roof.

Dragon scale shingles or Russian style 3-D diamond shingles make for a dramatic finish. They are similar to our diamonds but with a dimensional flourish at the base giving the look a powerful, dynamic feel.

Dragon scale shingles make it possible to accommodate radius features. Beyond just a raised base, we can build even more ornate pieces depending on your designs.

Pressed shingles
And though these are not named after an animal like the rest, remember we can make any manner of pressed tiles, too!

Fish scale shingles are similar to Beaver Tail tiles. Technically they could be called reciprocally. We tend to view fish scale shingles as pressed metal tiles with a more shallow profile. They might or might not have a design pressed into them.

And, as we mentioned above, we can press any design. Even if you have some old, historic metal tiles in desperate need of replacement. Whether they are technically fish scale or not, we can recreate any historical pressed metal tile for roof and wall. And we’ll build in the best engineering possible so they’ll last even longer than the original!

Beaver Tail Tiles or beaver shingles have a scalloped base. They are a very traditional design. Available in the market in every material from slate to asphalt, metal makes the most sense for sustainability, durability and design flexibility.
