Zinc shingles for roof and wall

by Christina

Zinc for roof and wall shingles, panels and historical restoration

We don’t see zinc as much on buildings in the United States as we do in Europe. Did you know that 80 percent of the rooftops in Paris are covered in zinc? And, arguably, people travel on vacation to places like Paris expressly to admire the exquisite architecture. And why wouldn’t they? These zinc rooftops have been inspiring artists like Vincent Van Gough for generations. They are so revered in fact, that Paris has been campaigning to have their rooftops recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Most of what makes a city or town picturesque, is the municipality’s skyline. And what makes a skyline beautiful? The roofs of course!

If you are looking for a very versatile metal for your roof and / or wall, consider zinc.

It goes without saying that zinc is a staple of historic / classic architecture styles, however zinc roofs and walls lend themselves well to very modern designs. Their cool, gray finish when in full weathered patina lends a very chic, clean and neat look for even the most forward thinking concepts.

Architectural zinc comes in natural finish, which arrives rather shiny from the mill and patinates cutting the shine after a few rains turning the finish a soft, matte gray. It also comes in preweathered where the factory produces a similar look to a moderately weathered zinc. Additionally, there are a myriad of color finishes applied by a proprietary process at the factory. With a few exceptions, they tend to have a very subtle look which augments when placed on a larger scope. Eventually, even these finishes will succumb to the weather and patina to a soft gray finish.
