Why a metal roof is a really good idea

by Christina

We’ve spent more concentrated effort recently on speaking to architects, owners, and installers who typically haven’t had much baseline interface with metal roofing. Sure, there are occasionally local building covenants determining a narrow list of which roofing and cladding products are to be used, but outside of those incidents, we want everyone to know what a superlative option having a metal roof and / or wall really is. So many people don’t know much about this topic, so we’ll keep it simple and make our case:

People have a lot of misconceptions and hesitancies about metal roofing. They think it’s expensive. They don’t know anyone who can install it. They think it only comes in standing seam. They think it’s ugly because they saw one prefab cheap something some time and made the assumption that was representative of the whole. Let’s address a few of those topics.

Is metal roofing expensive? It can be. It can be a super luxury option for extremely high end buildings. But it doesn’t HAVE to be. In fact, if you consider the “cost-per-wear” or in this case, the hassle-free life span of our most budget-friendly systems in galvalume, you’ve probably saved a ton even over asphalt. And who wouldn’t want something that looks bougie without the price tag?

We’ve been working hard to make our diamonds and Quadro panels more efficiently produced and even revamped how we manufacture our Beaver Tail options so you can enjoy a reasonable price for an extremely high quality product.

If you think metal roofs are ugly, you just haven’t seen the right one. Metal roofs were actually developed to waterproof tall buildings like churches, cathedrals, and palaces pre forklift, crane and boom lift eras. Imagine how difficult it must have been to go up on a sky-high roof every time a clay or slate tile broke and caused a leak? And if those European masterworks of architectural art with metal roofs don’t make your jaw drop, well then, we don’t know what to tell you.

When you’re traveling, and you see a town that’s picture book beautiful, odds are, the roofs in that town are largely a part of what makes it so. We do realize there are metal roofs and then, there are metal roofs. If you think of a beat up gas station in the middle of nowhere with an old metal overlapping system rusting and flapping in the wind, rather than a grand palace roof with fully interconnecting pieces and fully seamed with interconnecting components, then we’re certainly not talking about the same thing.

Not only are our shingles and systems unparalleled in beauty, they are unparalleled in performance as well. Part of what you are paying for up front, is knowing our systems are maintenance-free. Unless a tree branch falls on them or some other extreme circumstance occurs, you can plan on a drama-free outcome for as long as the material lasts. In the case of metals like stainless steel, that translates to perhaps a thousand years or more!

We get it. Metal roofing is a specialty trade and not everyone is suited or capable of properly installing it. We never self install so we never compete with our installer clients, colleagues and friends. But we do make recommendations if you need someone. And if you’re an installer with a particularly difficult project on the horizon, or just want to take your skills to the next level, reach out to us regarding assistance and education. That goes for architects, too! We’ll help you plan the tricky parts so you can get on with your day heartburn-free.

There are real, permanent ways to solve for details that don’t rely on overlap, caulk or other cheap tricks. Not everyone knows how to bypass that. All our systems are meant to be permanent and gorgeous. We’ll help everyone on the team get to that goal.

If you haven’t thought about metal roofs before, then today is the day to start! If you have any misconceptions about metal roofing, now is the opportunity to think again. There just isn’t a more perfect system to keep your building protected out there. Bring your trickiest questions and give us a call! We’re excited to help you make a change for the better!
